In both Italy and the UK, the corona infection rate has now passed spring levels.

The populous countries were hit hard during the first wave of Covid and now many fear what autumn has in store.

Italian authorities have recorded 221 coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours. This is the highest number in a single day since mid-May and the first time the death toll has exceeded 200 in a single day since the same month last spring.

On Monday, 141 corona-related deaths were reported in the country.

Nearly 22,000 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry announced on Tuesday. This is the highest daily figure since the infection was first detected in the country.

Similar to the spring wave of infections, the northern Italian region of Lombardy is one of the worst affected – over 5,000 of the last 24 hours' cases were registered in the region.

In total, over 560,000 cases of the infection have been detected in Italy and over 37,000 people have lost their lives since being infected.

In the UK too, the second wave of the infection now seems to have rolled in – 367 new deaths were reported there during the day, the highest number since May.

At the end of March, a week after the country was shut down to stop the spread of the infection, the corresponding figure was 374.

Infection levels have been relatively low since the nationwide lockdown was lifted at the beginning of the summer but are now starting to rise again – almost 23,000 new cases of the infection were reported on Tuesday.

To prevent this wave of infections from becoming too long, local restrictions have recently been introduced in various places around the country.
