The EU is expected to make the first decision to approve a vaccine against Covid-19 on December 29.
– We are working hard to make a decision then, says Charlotta Bergquist at the Medical Products Agency, which is participating in the review of the vaccine, to Sveriges Radio Ekot.
The decision concerns the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine and is being made by the European Medicines Agency EMA, which has previously said that the earliest a vaccine approval could come is the end of December.
On Wednesday, the UK became the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine. In the EU, the European Commission must make the formal decision, after the EMA has given its approval. This can normally take a couple of months, but is now expected to happen in a few days.
If the vaccine is approved by the EMA on December 29, it can begin to be transported to Sweden after the Christmas and New Year holidays.
-As soon as possible after the weekends, this should be underway, says Sören Andersson, head of the vaccination program unit at the Swedish Public Health Agency, to Ekot.
