The year 2020 was dark for Swedish airports. The company Swedavia, which is owned by the state and operates ten Swedish airports, made a loss of nearly 1.7 billion SEK during the year.
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a 74 percent drop in travel at Swedavia's airports in 2020 to 10.3 million passengers. Turnover shrank by 60 percent to SEK 2.5 billion, according to a press release. Operating profit amounted to minus SEK 1.6 billion (+0.7).
”"Our passengers disappeared almost overnight in mid-March and we lost a total of 30 million passengers during the year. Not since the early 1980s has air travel in Sweden been at such low levels as in 2020," says Swedavia's CEO Jonas Abrahamsson in a comment.
The beginning of 2021 has also been strongly influenced by the pandemic, and the number of travelers at airports has remained at historically low levels during January, according to the company.
Conditions still exist for a recovery ahead of the important summer season for aviation, but according to Swedavia, there is still great uncertainty about developments related to vaccinations and travel restrictions.
