Flight suspension a severe blow to tourism in Morocco

When Morocco closed its borders to international flights on Monday, the immediate result was an avalanche of canceled trips, closed hotels and bankruptcy alarms from tour operators.

After two years of austerity, the latest crisis is a "fatal blow" to the sector, according to the national trade association of tour operators FNAVM.

“All reservations have been canceled and most hotels have to close,” says Lahcen Zelmat, chairman of the hotel industry organization FNIH.

Losses for the sector are feared to amount to at least 88 million euros between Christmas and New Year, reports Medias24.

During the pandemic, over 30 percent of jobs in Morocco's tourism sector have disappeared, according to the hotel industry organization.
