Train services in Norrbotten are now being cancelled due to the cold. According to the operator Vy, which runs the night train services, this is to ensure the safety of passengers.
This concerns train traffic around Kiruna, which is now being cancelled, as several days with temperatures below minus 30 degrees are expected.
The operator VY, which runs the night train service to and from Norrbotten, states the following:
”"Our locomotives and carriages can handle these temperatures, but on some routes the trains travel long distances through roadless country. This means limited possibilities for troubleshooting or evacuation if something were to happen to the infrastructure or vehicles. As a safety measure, we have therefore decided to suspend traffic on selected sections of the route."”
The stoppage may last until Thursday, December 9th.
Regional operator Norrtåg is also canceling services in the Kiruna area. The cancelled train services, mainly between Gällivare and Kiruna, will be replaced by buses. This applies on Monday.
