New restrictions come into effect in Finland today to curb the increasing spread of Covid-19.
The spread of Covid-19 is increasing in Finland, particularly the Omicron variant, and new national restrictions will be introduced on Tuesday.
Amongst other measures, restaurants will have to stop serving alcohol at 5 PM and close by 6 PM. Cinemas and sports halls will have to close for two weeks, reports Yle. Universities and colleges are recommended to conduct distance learning after the Christmas holidays, but primary schools will remain open.
Finland is also resuming border controls and is requiring a negative test result for everyone entering the country. In addition, people must be able to present a COVID pass or a certificate stating they have recovered from COVID-19 in the last six months.
On Tuesday, it is held a government meeting and further restrictions may be considered. The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) wants, among other things, a pause on the use of COVID passports in the coming weeks. The certificate is currently not a guarantee against infection, according to Director General Markku Tervahauta.
”The new variant is so easily transmissible that the idea of those who can show a coronavirus pass not being infected no longer works,” he tells DN, but does not rule out that the certificates may serve a purpose further down the line.
