The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises against going on a cruise. The change in recommendation also applies to vaccinated travelers, according to the agency's website.
Cruise lines, which had been among the winners at the start of trading on Thursday, fell sharply after the announcement. Norwegian Cruise Lines and Carnival fell 2.9 and 1.9 percent, respectively, while Royal Caribbean fell 1.8 percent.
The authority is raising the risk level for covid-19, known as the Travel Health Notice, from 3 to 4, the highest possible level.
”This reflects the increase in the number of cases on board cruise ships since the identification of the omicron variant,” the authority explains on its website.
