Danish Covid certificates may have shorter validity

Vaccination certificates issued in Denmark may have a shorter validity period in the future, as the vaccine appears to provide less protection against the omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The Danish public health authority, the National Board of Health, believes that the validity period should be shortened to five months for people who have received two vaccine doses.

”"We now know that the vaccines' protection against omicron is less and therefore we have recommended changing the validity period of the corona passport," says the authority's second-in-command Helene Probst in a press release.

There currently appears to be support for this in the Swedish Parliament's special epidemic committee, according to Ritzau.

Researchers in Denmark have studied almost 12,000 cases of infection with the omicron variant and found that people who have received two doses of the vaccine are at about the same risk of being infected with it as unvaccinated people. The Danish National Board of Health states that the vaccine still provides protection against omicron, but that immunity decreases rapidly, after about two months.

A discussion is also underway in Sweden about the criteria for the so-called Covid passport. Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren (S) has told TT that it may be relevant to change the requirements as more people receive a third vaccine dose, but she also added that it is a matter for the Public Health Agency.TT
