Air New Zealand has been named the safest airline in 2022.
SAS climbs several positions and enters the top ten.
The ranking list has been compiled by the independent aviation website Airline Ratings, which makes the assessment based on, among other things, incidents, serious accidents, government investigations, safety measures regarding the coronavirus and the condition of the companies' aircraft fleet.
All of the top 20 airlines have the highest safety rating, seven stars, and the airline website notes that there is very little that separates the airlines on the top list. SAS SAS -3,03% advances from last year's sixteenth place, climbing ten places to sixth place.
Winner Air New Zealand tops the list, citing few incidents, the number of technical innovations, extensive pilot training and a low average age of the fleet – 6.8 years.
”Air New Zealand is an airline that stands out, with a strong focus on safety and its customers, and over the past 18 months, COVID-19 has brought yet another new dimension to the challenges facing the industry,” said Airline Ratings editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas in a statement, continuing:
”Air New Zealand has excelled across the broad safety spectrum, never missing the smallest detail, while also looking after its flight crews who have been working under significant stress.”
Last year's winner, Australian airline Qantas, has topped the list several times before but is now in seventh place. Founded in 1921, the airline has not been involved in a single fatal accident since it began operating jet services in 1951. However, following an incident in 2018, when two Qantas planes nearly collided on a runway in Perth, Australia, the airline has dropped to seventh place.
At the bottom, with only one star, are Pakistan International Airlines, Air Algerie and Scat from Kazakhstan, among others.
