The number of travelers at Swedish airports increased in February compared to last year, but remains at low levels compared to the time before the pandemic.

State-owned airport company Swedavia warns that the Ukraine war could affect future flying.

”"Airspace restrictions and economic sanctions have so far had a limited impact on air travel, but can of course have a greater impact in the future," says Swedavia's CEO Jonas Abrahamsson in a press release.

Around 1.2 million travelers flew via Swedavia's ten airports in February 2022. This is an increase of 335 percent compared to the pandemic month of February 2021, but a decrease of 58 percent compared to February 2019.

The majority of travelers in February – 786,000 – were international travelers.

”"After a weak start to the year, air travel gradually increased during February, primarily driven by eased restrictions but also by increased travel in connection with the sports holidays," says Jonas Abrahamsson.

He further says that Swedavia's airports have basic preparedness and established collaboration with authorities to assist with potential community interventions that may become relevant due to the war in Ukraine.
