The waiting times to get a new passport are several months.

Many have reported the Police Authority to the Ombudsman and perhaps the long queue times may even be contrary to the constitution.

– It is not without problems, says Tormod Otter Johansen, doctor of public law.

Anyone who wants to renew their passport can currently expect to receive an appointment only after the summer, or at worst at the end of the year.

The frustration has already led to around twenty reports against the police to the Swedish Ombudsman (JO), as the authority is obliged under the Administrative Procedure Act to handle cases promptly.

The long waiting times could also conflict with the constitutionally protected freedom of movement. According to the Constitution, all Swedish citizens have the right to move freely within the country and to leave it.

The latter is currently causing concern for the approximately 1.5 million Swedes who have not renewed their passports. Source: TT)
