The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is extending the requirement for travelers to wear face masks when traveling on public transportation. The decision on Wednesday means that the requirement will be extended until May 3. It was due to expire on Monday.
The national decision is being formally made by President Joe Biden's administration. The reason is that the CDC wants to extend studies of the effects of virus mutations, especially the omicron form that is the main cause of infection in the United States.
The spread of infection in the country also appears to be increasing at present.
The decision applies to, among other things, travel by plane, bus and train as well as stays in travel terminals.
The CDC had hoped to present a more flexible strategy for face mask use after Easter week.
