Two women have been killed in a shark attack near the tourist resort of Hurghada on Egypt's Red Sea coast. They were attacked while swimming, the Egyptian Ministry of Environment said.

The women were tourists from Austria and Romania, respectively. The Austrian news agency APA reports that the Austrian is a 68-year-old woman who was on vacation in Egypt.

The beaches in the area have been closed for three days. An investigation will clarify the "causes and circumstances".
