Finland will limit the number of granted visa applications from Russian citizens to one tenth of the current number in September, announces Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto (Green Party).
”"At the same time, we want to make it easier for people to come to Finland to work, study or visit relatives," Haavisto tells Swedish Yle.
”"So there should be solutions for those who have a reason to come to Finland and regular tourist visas to Finland should become more difficult to obtain."”
Since Russia lifted travel restrictions following the coronavirus pandemic this summer, the flow of Russian tourists to Finland has increased significantly. Finland is also considered to have become a transit country for Russians wishing to continue on to Europe, as flights from Russia have been halted by sanctions over Moscow's war in Ukraine.
Schengen rules and Finnish law do not allow Finland to completely stop issuing tourist visas to Russians.
