New fires are raging in southwestern France and have already burned through over 1,000 hectares, while a heat wave, according to the weather service Météo France, has caused the highest September temperatures ever recorded in the area.

Hundreds of people have been forced to evacuate their homes in the Gironde region due to uncontrolled fires. Strong winds are hampering firefighting efforts in the area, where temperatures reached 39 degrees Celsius on Monday. In the Landes region, which lies south of Gironde, the mercury reached 39.1 degrees Celsius.
