All passenger flights at Shanghai's two international airports have been suspended as Typhoon Muifa approaches China, the airport operator announced.

Land and sea transport is also being affected at some of the world's busiest ports, with waves as high as six metres reported off the Chinese coast.

The eye of the storm will make landfall in the evening local time, around lunchtime Swedish time. The coastal provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Fujian are expected to be hit hardest.

Measured in cargo tonnage, the twin port cities of Ningbo-Zhoushan in the southern Shanghai area are the world's largest ports.

As recently as a few weeks ago, parts of the same area were reporting brutal drought and water shortages.
