All of Cuba was left without electricity on Tuesday when Hurricane Ian swept across the country.

According to the country's state-owned electricity company, efforts were underway overnight to restore power to the country's 11 million residents. Initially, only the western parts of the country were affected, but then the entire power grid collapsed.

No fatalities have been reported so far in connection with the storm's advance, but around 50,000 people have had to be evacuated, areas have been flooded and buildings have been damaged.

According to state media, the country's President Miguel Díaz-Canel has visited the worst-hit region.

The storm is moving north and the US state of Florida is preparing for Ian's arrival. 2.5 million people there have been ordered to evacuate.
