Over the course of a day, the Hong Kong region lifts almost all remaining Covid restrictions.
The requirement for a vaccination certificate and a number of other restrictions are being abolished.
Large gatherings will be allowed again and requirements to take a PCR test after entry will be removed starting Thursday, says Hong Kong leader John Lee.
In addition, those who have been close to someone who has been infected do not need to quarantine themselves. And the restriction on how many people can sit together in restaurants and bars is being removed.
Almost all major restrictions will disappear in one day. However, a requirement for face masks and rapid tests in preschools and schools remains.
Hong Kong has been hit hard by the strict quarantine rules, not least as a financial center in Asia. John Lee argues that the changes are now possible because the city's immunity is high, the healthcare system has experience in treating Covid, awareness among residents has been raised and emergency preparedness has improved.
”The above-mentioned changes are a strong impetus for Hong Kong to recover,” says John Lee.
The announcement comes the day after mainland China eased its entry rules. In early December, China made a U-turn on its Covid policy.
Since then, the spread of the infection has accelerated. According to some estimates, up to a million Chinese citizens are at risk of dying from COVID-19 in the coming months.
