Air travel recovered strongly last year. The number of passengers at state-owned Swedavia's airports was 28 million, more than double the number the year before.
2022 began with a pandemic and general anxiety. As a result, travel had plummeted in Sweden and the world. For the airline industry, this meant fewer passengers than before the Covid outbreak. The number of passengers at Swedavia's airports then increased during the year.
In total, travel increased by 130 percent, Swedavia writes in a press release. From 12 million travelers in 2021 to 28 million in 2022.
”"2022 was characterized above all by the strong recovery and the desire to travel again after a long period of pandemic," comments Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia's President and CEO, in the press release.
He notes that the airlines' efforts have also led to more travelers choosing to fly. This is especially true at Arlanda, where several new airlines have established themselves. The companies are also flying to a number of new destinations.
Just over 18 million travelers took off or landed at Arlanda during the year, but despite a sharp increase compared to the previous year, the number is around 75 percent of pre-pandemic levels.
Luleå Airport had more passengers in December than before the pandemic. One explanation is that international traffic from Norrbotten increased during that month, including new direct routes to London and Paris.
