Both the cause of the train accident in India and those responsible have been identified, says the country's railway minister.

”"We have identified the cause of the accident and the people responsible," Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister responsible for railways, told the media.

He points out that it is a fault in the signaling system, which led one of the trains to the wrong track. Vaishnaw does not want to provide more details until an investigation has been carried out because he believes that it would not be appropriate.

At least 300 people died in the accident in Odisha in the eastern part of the country.

Indian authorities have announced that they have ended the search for survivors this morning. Over 900 people were injured in the accident. In total, almost 3,000 people were on the three trains.

It was on Friday that the passenger train collided with a freight train and derailed. Then a third train collided with some of the derailed carriages. A preliminary investigation showed already on Saturday that a signaling error could be behind it.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the scene of the accident on Saturday. He expressed his dismay at the incident and announced that the cause of the accident would be investigated, reports Sky News.

”"The culprits should be given the strictest punishment - they will not get away with it," Modi said during a press conference.
