Aircraft manufacturer Boeing expects airlines around the world to buy 42,595 aircraft over the next 20 years, representing total sales of around $8 trillion (equivalent to SEK 85 trillion).

Boeing's marketing manager Darren Hulst expects that increased climate concern will cause more people to choose trains for shorter trips, which will likely reduce demand for certain types of domestic air travel.

Another factor slowing aircraft sales is that airlines are increasing productivity through various measures, according to Boeing. The company expects that larger, more packed aircraft that fly more hours could increase productivity by 20 percent during the period.

Despite this, Boeing assumes that the global aircraft fleet will almost double by 2042, with a growth rate of 3.5 percent per year.

Competitor Airbus makes a similar assessment and expects global sales of new aircraft over the next 20 years to be 40,850.
