The Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland were formed around 400 million years ago and are today an important geological landscape with mountain peaks, glacial lakes and lush green nature. And now the history of the area is being further recognised. UNESCO has named the Mourne Gullion Strangford region as a new Global Geopark in the UK – in tribute to the region’s geological and cultural significance. The Geopark is located in the south-east of Northern Ireland and covers a land area of 1932 km².
It consists of an extensive rock and stone landscape created by lava – formed over millions of years. The geopark offers a variety of activities, hiking trails and places to explore. For example, you can go on a hike through the ice age landscape, paddle SUP on the rivers and enjoy the fantastic views from the viewpoints.
