The highest average temperature ever for the Mediterranean Sea's surface water was measured on Monday.

With 28.71 degrees, the previous record from August 2003 of 28.25 degrees was broken, AFP reports.

The average surface temperature is measured by satellites within the framework of the EU's Copernicus program.

”"It's only July. We usually see the highest temperatures of the year in August," tweeted British meteorologist Scott Duncan.
