Starting today, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) will only offer ”Sustainable Fare” fares for its domestic flights between Zurich and Geneva. These fares include a component to offset the carbon emissions generated by customers’ flights. The decision to introduce only sustainable fares on this route is part of SWISS’s ambition to reduce its climate impact and promote sustainability in aviation.

Sustainable fares mean that part of the ticket price is used to offset the carbon emissions of the flight. For these domestic flights, 20 percent of the emissions are offset through the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), while the remaining 80 percent is a corresponding contribution to high-quality climate protection projects. In addition, SWISS is now offering an additional sustainable fare on this route, which offsets 50 percent of the emissions through SAF purchases and 50 percent through contributions to climate protection projects.

SWISS aims to become completely carbon neutral by 2050 and sees the introduction of sustainable fares for its domestic flights as an important step towards this goal. By offering its customers the opportunity to reduce their climate impact and support sustainability projects directly through their flight ticket, SWISS hopes to raise awareness of sustainable travel and encourage more people to choose more environmentally friendly options.

The new fares only apply to flights between Zurich and Geneva and do not apply to connecting flights. This initiative is part of SWISS’s broader initiative to make air travel more sustainable and environmentally friendly. During the year, it also introduced easier ways for customers to purchase sustainable aviation fuel and invest in climate protection projects to offset their carbon emissions.

SWISS CEO Dieter Vranckx emphasizes the company's responsibility towards society and the environment, saying: "We will continue to constantly expand our range of products and offers for more sustainable air travel, and this is an important step on that journey." By offering only sustainable ticket prices for its domestic flights, SWISS is demonstrating its commitment to reducing the negative impact of aviation on the environment and promoting a more sustainable future.
