A ferry with 71 people on board is being evacuated after it ran aground in Pukaviksbukten, outside Hörvik in Blekinge.

During the morning and afternoon, both the Coast Guard, the Swedish Maritime Rescue Society and pilot boats are on site.

– A decision was made to evacuate. The first people have been allowed to board the Swedish Maritime Administration boats. All passengers and non-essential crew will be evacuated to Karlshamn, says Lisa Mjörming, communications manager at the Swedish Maritime Administration.

The ferry, Marco Polo, was on its way from Trelleborg to Karlshamn. But at 06.25 it came to a halt after the ferry ran aground.

After the evacuation, they will investigate what happened and try to pull the ferry free.

According to the Coast Guard, diesel has leaked from, reports P4 Blekinge.

The smell should be felt all the way to the mainland.
