The new ships are a further development of sister ships MSC World Europa and MSC World America, which are currently the most energy-efficient cruise ships in the world, with performance exceeding the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements. The new ships will feature several innovative solutions to maximize energy efficiency, with extensive use of heat recovery and other technical solutions to further reduce their carbon footprint. The ships will also be optimized for a variety of alternative fuels, such as bio- and synthetic methane, as well as green methanol.

“We are proud to continue our 20-year partnership with Chantiers de l'Atlantique, with whom we have already built eighteen ships and with our nineteenth currently under construction. With these two new ships, we continue to make progress on our journey to reduce carbon emissions and reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MSC Cruises.

The ships, currently designated World Class 3 and World Class 4, will feature shore power connections to reduce carbon emissions in ports, the most advanced wastewater treatment systems designed in line with IMO, outstanding waste management, and energy-efficient equipment on board to optimize engine and energy use to further reduce emissions.
