Economically troubled Sri Lanka may be on the path to recovery, largely thanks to tourists finding their way back to the country again.

In the last quarter, GDP growth rose by 4.5 percent compared to the catastrophic figure of minus 12.4 percent in the previous year.

This is after the number of foreign visitors doubled in December compared to the previous year when visitor numbers stood at 91,900.

Sri Lanka's precarious situation led to a request for, and receipt of, a $2.9 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund almost exactly a year ago. President Ranil Wickremesinghe has since, among other things, significantly raised taxes in order to assist the national treasury.
