The EU's competition authority objects to German airline Lufthansa's attempt to acquire a stake in Italian state-owned ITA Airways, according to a press release.
The planned deal could limit competition on certain routes to and from Italy, which could lead to price increases and reduced quality for consumers, the European Commission writes. The concerns about the impact on competition are described as "preliminary".
Lufthansa and the Italian government are now given the opportunity to present a plan for how the shortcomings can be addressed.
Lufthansa is trading marginally down on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on Monday.
