During March, nearly 2.5 million passengers flew via Swedavia's ten airports. International travel continued to develop positively during the month and increased by 5 percent compared to March last year, while domestic travel had a weaker development and was affected by an earlier Easter this year, which resulted in lower demand for domestic travel.
Sweden's largest airports, Stockholm Arlanda and Gothenburg Landvetter, and Swedavia's regional airport, Kiruna Airport, had the strongest passenger growth in March. During the spring, airlines continue to invest in the Swedish market with new air traffic ahead of the summer season, including Delta Air Lines returning in April with a direct route between Arlanda and New York.
-Demand for international travel continued to increase while domestic travel developed more weakly, especially during Easter, with the exception of Kiruna Airport where both international and domestic travel increased during the month. Our airline customers continue to strengthen our route and destination offer gradually ahead of the summer season, which is positive for Swedish accessibility. Flying enables people to meet and benefits both the tourism industry in Sweden and meets the demand that exists in the market for international travel both for work and private purposes to meet family and friends as well as to create new experiences, says Charlotte Ljunggren, Marketing and Sales Director at Swedavia.
At the end of March, Gothenburg Landvetter Airport's completely new commercial offering was inaugurated, with a greater breadth and variety in around 20 new restaurants, cafés and shops for the airport's travelers.
The airlines' summer programs continue to develop with more new routes and new destinations at Swedavia's ten airports. So far, approximately 14 new routes from Stockholm Arlanda Airport and 8 new routes from Gothenburg Landvetter have been announced for the summer of 2024 - with around ten new destinations, such as SAS's ventures, Stockholm Arlanda-Seville and Norwegian's new route, Stockholm Arlanda-Bari and Gothenburg Landvetter-Dubrovnik.
