Amid cheers and applause from the control room in California, the giant Starship rocket landed with a splash in the Indian Ocean.

An hour or so earlier, SpaceX's enormous prototype rocket had been launched from Boca Chica, Texas, with the aim of reaching space and returning to Earth's atmosphere before landing in the ocean.

Some parts of the rocket are reported to have broken off or burned up, but exactly how much is still unclear. However, Space X considers this fourth attempt to be a success.

Founder and CEO Elon Musk congratulates on X to a ”grand achievement” and the staff in the control room in Hawthorne celebrated according to NBC News with marshmallows.

The Super Rocket is the spacecraft intended to eventually take humans to the Moon and later also to Mars.

Three previous attempts have ended with Starship being destroyed, which according to the company is an acceptable cost for being able to test quickly.

In April and November of last year respectively, the craft exploded during launch. In mid-March of this year, the third launch was more successful. Starship then made it all the way into space but burned up on re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.
