Greece: Risk of water shortage

Remove

Following the warmest winter and earliest heatwave on record, Greek authorities are warning of the risk of water shortages this summer.

The primary water reserve for the capital, Athens, is down to levels 30 percent lower than at the same time last year.

”Would you like some water? Turn off the tap!” reads an appeal to the city's residents.

Elsewhere in the Greek archipelago, the situation is even more acute. Many of the islands rely on wells and desalination plants to meet their water needs, and the pressure on the islands is increasing in line with tourist travel to Greece.

In some areas, the water demand in summer is ”100 times greater than in winter,” says an expert interviewed by the news agency AFP.
