Over 30,000 Boeing employees go on strike over pay dispute, halting much of aircraft production, reports CNBC.

The employers have proposed a 25 percent pay increase, with healthcare and pension benefits. 

But employees in the US states of Seattle and Oregon have complained that this does not cover the increased cost of living. The union has therefore wanted to see wage increases of 40 percent.

The announcement is a major setback for the company's newly appointed CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who said a strike would jeopardize Boeing's financial recovery.
