Indonesia has imposed a moratorium on the construction of hotels, villas and nightclubs in some areas of the tourist-heavy island of Bali, an official told Reuters, part of the government's efforts to tackle the impact of mass tourism.

However, the exact timetable is subject to further discussions, according to the source.

Tourism has recovered in Bali following the pandemic, but there is growing concern about the strain visitors are placing on the island.

Tourism Minister Sandigaga Uno has warned that the southern parts of the island are at risk of overtourism. The government is now trying to find a balance between important revenue streams and protecting the local environment and culture.

In February, a tourist tax was introduced, and the authorities hope to build a railway line between the airport and popular tourist destinations to reduce the pressure on the roads.
