Ahead of the Christmas and New Year's holidays, the Åre Avalanche Center is warning of a high avalanche danger in the southern Jämtland mountains. Several other places in the mountains are under avalanche warnings after recent snowfall.
The avalanche danger in Åre, Bydalen, Sylarna and Storulvån is currently assessed as significant – a three on a five-point scale – following heavy snowfall in recent days. The snowfall is expected to continue before Christmas.
What should you consider when setting out?
– The ski resorts themselves are safe on the slopes and near the slopes, the trails are generally safe. But there is still little snow, says Petter Palmgren at the government service Avalanche Forecasts.
But there are also warnings of avalanches in the southern Lapland mountains, the western Härjedal mountains and the Western Vindelfjällen mountains. The risk there is assessed as moderate, a two on the five-point scale.
