A five-month-old gorilla cub was found in December in a box in the cargo hold of a Turkish Airlines plane.
The gorilla has now been named Zeytin, olive in Swedish, after a public competition and is being cared for at Polonezkoy Zoo in Istanbul.
In recent weeks, the cub has gained weight and now authorities are considering returning him to his natural habitat.
The plane was en route from Nigeria to Thailand. As Istanbul becomes an intercontinental aviation hub, customs officials have discovered more illegally traded animals.
Gorillas, both the western and eastern species, are classified as endangered.
