Shirt-wearing is the rule in the popular tourist resort of Albufeira in Portugal. Otherwise, you risk a fine of around 15,000 kronor, according to a new proposal.
The authorities in Albufeira are tired of seeing tourists strutting around town in just their swimming trunks or bikinis. Now, new rules and fines of 1,500 euros, equivalent to around 15,000 Swedish kronor, are being proposed for anyone who doesn't dress up, reports Euronews. Anyone who is not even wearing a swimsuit but is walking around naked is subject to even higher fines.
The proposal not only bans naked walking but also other types of ”inappropriate behavior.” It is proposed to ban urinating in public, spitting on the ground, and having sex where someone else can see you.
British tourist danced naked
The new rules come after a British tourist danced naked – in broad daylight – on a rooftop bar, writes Euronews. The city is a popular destination for families but also for hen and stag parties. It broke a visitor record last year with 5.2 million tourists. The lion's share of visitors are from the UK.
The city's mayor, José Carlos Martins Rolo, has said that he wants to reduce dependence on the British market in the future, Euronews writes.
Albufeira is one of a number of tourist destinations that require more clothing from visitors. In the Spanish cities of Barcelona and Mallorca, you can be fined 300 euros if you go topless or in a swimsuit in town. The Croatian tourist cities of Split, Dubrovnik and Hvar have also introduced similar rules, as has Nice in France.
