Western European tourism in the United States plummeted by 17 percent in March, new statistics show.

President Donald Trump's actions, both political and economic, have scared away European tourists.

Visitors from Western Europe who stayed at least one night in United States of America fell by 17 percent in March, compared to the same month last year, writes the Financial Times, whose figures are taken from the International Trade Administration.

From some countries such as Norway, Denmark and Germany the decline is even greater. Swedish tourists have reduced their travel by around 17-18 percent, according to statistics.

Part of the decline can possibly be explained by the fact that Easter, which is a major travel holiday, fell in March last year.

Tourism is an important part of the US economy and accounts for 2.5 percent of the country's GDP.
