Music, multiple venues, entertainment and, above all, spectacular fireworks. The 24th edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival takes place at the end of April. The event consists of four nights of spectacular fireworks displays, including a music competition where the fireworks are synchronized to music. The Malta International Fireworks Festival is an annual event that celebrates the island's rich tradition of fireworks.

Back in time

The Malta International Fireworks Festival is not just a colourful spectacle, it also has a deeper meaning. The festival was first held in 2003 to mark Malta’s accession to the European Union. It was intended as a celebration of Malta’s new role on the international stage – and of course, it was done in style: with fireworks!

The tradition of fireworks in Malta goes back much further, to the 16th and 17th centuries, when the knights used fireworks at religious festivals and national celebrations. To this day, every village on the island ends its annual village festival (festa) with a local fireworks display.

Various locations

An impressive blend of art, culture, music and tradition, the Malta International Fireworks Festival is a unique experience for young and old alike. The festival is special because it is held in several different locations around the island. The grand finale takes place in Valletta's Grand Harbour on April 30th.

The festival starts at 10pm, but the festivities often start earlier in the evening. Food trucks, live music and bars are dotted throughout the city. (Some of the best places to watch the fireworks are Upper Barrakka Gardens, Ta' Liesse and Barracca Wharf in Valletta). Not a fireworks fan? No problem, there's something for everyone!
