Several beaches in Tenerife have been closed after high levels of intestinal bacteria were detected. The holiday paradise has become a hotbed of infection where tourists and locals are strictly advised to stay away from the water, writes Birmingham Live.  

High levels of E. coli bacteria have forced several beaches to close in a short period. 

Recently, at least three major beaches have been closed, including La Jaquita beach in the south-west of Tenerife, write Manchester Evening News. 

While the beaches remain closed, locals and tourists are advised to avoid the water and follow all posted signage. High levels of E. coli bacteria are the cause of all closures.  

E. coli is a bacterium commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals. Ingesting the bacteria can cause stomach cramps, severe diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and fever. 

The closures have caused concern among locals and travellers who have booked their holidays to Tenerife in the coming weeks, write Birmingham Live.
