New rules in Mallorca

Remove

Are you planning to travel to Mallorca this summer? There are a number of new rules to keep an eye on – to avoid fines. Among other things, there will be stricter requirements for electric scooters and rental of holiday homes.

Efforts to curb mass tourism on the Spanish archipelago of the Balearic Islands continue.

At the end of April, the Palma city council voted on Majorcaa new bill with a series of measures to tackle the problem. They are expected to come into force in mid-May, just in time for the peak season for Swedish tourists.

"It's not just about fines and bans. With the etiquette rules we promote a safe and clean city. Good behavior is no longer an exception," said city councilor Miquel Busqets in connection with the vote, according to German media. Mallorca Newspaper.

New requirements

The new laws mean that helmets will be mandatory and insurance will be required for electric scooter riders in Palma. There will also be stricter conditions for caravan campers, who will only be allowed to stay in the same place for a maximum of ten days.

Street performers are also affected. They are no longer allowed to perform for as long as they want, with a maximum of 30 minutes – otherwise they risk fines and even having their instruments confiscated.

The laws also mean stricter requirements for renting out holiday rentals throughout the Balearic Islands, which in addition to Mallorca also includes Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, writes Mallorca News.

Rental rules are being tightened

According to the site, no new licenses for vacation rentals in apartment buildings will be granted, and existing ones will only be renewed if they meet a series of quality criteria. At the same time, fines for illegal rentals will be increased by 25 percent, up to almost 5.5 million kronor in more serious cases.

The opposition in Palma's council has criticized the new measures and has promised to take them to court.

“This will not contribute one bit to better coexistence,” said Angélica Pastor, a municipal councilor in the opposition, according to Mallorca Zeitung.
