Forget Italy and Spain – this year it's Japan that tops the list when Swedes get to choose where they want to travel, according to the latest survey on travel habits by travel agency Ticket.

Japan has quickly become one of the most sought-after travel destinations among Swedes. According to the travel agency Ticket's annual travel survey, it is now the country most people would most like to travel to. Young adults stand out as being particularly fond of the country in the East – in the 18–29 age group, one in five people say they would most like to travel to Japan.

– It is clear that more and more people are looking beyond the classic travel destinations, such as Spain. Japan has become something of a trend country and this is not only noticeable in our survey but also in the bookings. Since the beginning of the year, bookings to Japan have increased by 66 percent compared to the same period last year, says Tiyoneh Jah, PR and communications manager at travel agency Ticket.

The US and Italy come in second and third place respectively. But the US stands out – the country evokes strong emotions on both sides and at the same time ranks third among the countries Swedes would rather avoid. This makes the US the survey's most polarizing travel destination.
