Three people have died and several others have been injured following a lightning strike near the Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia.

The affected individuals had sought shelter in the temple during a thunderstorm.

The accident has not been commented on by the authorities, but news agency AP has had the death toll confirmed by a spokesperson.

Following the accident, the country's tourism minister urged everyone to remove photos from social media because they were spreading ”negative information” that could harm the country's tourism.

Angkor Wat is a temple that was built in the 12th century and was dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, but later became a sacred site for Buddhists. Approximately 2 million tourists visit the temples annually.
