Hotel strikes are planned in Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca this summer. The reason is dissatisfaction with wages and working conditions. The plan is to "cause as much disruption as possible for tourists," writes Daily Mail.

The Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT), the largest union in the hotel and restaurant industry in Spain, wants better wages and conditions through a renegotiation of the collective agreement for the hotel industry on the archipelago Balearic Islands.

Dissatisfied with the progress of ongoing negotiations, hotel workers across the Balearic Islands are now planning to walk out of work in protest for parts of June and July, saying they want to cause as much disruption to tourists as possible to achieve maximum impact.

This is likely to affect thousands of holidaymakers. A strike is currently planned for June 6th and further action is expected over several days, every other week in July.

– If we do not see the possibility of an agreement in principle, we will call a strike that lasts several days, says a UGT official.

”The Canary Islands have a border”

Among the affected establishments are hotels in some of Mallorca's most popular holiday resorts such as Platja de Palma, Palma Nova and Magaluf.

The Balearic Islands have already experienced a similar strike which took place on May 1st.

There have also been several protests against tourism in cities on the mainland and in the Canary Islands, where people marched under the slogan "The Canary Islands have a limit".

The UGT is demanding a 19 percent wage increase over the next three years, but employers are refusing to agree to more than 8.5 percent.
