The holiday week has certainly become cheaper compared to last year, but in ten years the prices have skyrocketed. The comparison service Zmarta has reviewed the price trend for four Swedish travel classics: Charter, camping, car holiday and regular flight with accommodation. Zmarta's review shows, among other things, that a family of two children gets about five camping weeks for the price of one week's charter.
In the summer of 2025, an average charter week will cost almost 40,000 kronor for a family of two adults and two children. Flying regularly and renting a home abroad for a week will cost just over 22,000 kronor, while a summer week in Sweden will cost around 17,000 kronor, including a summer cottage and car trip.
Five weeks of camping for the price of a charter
For the camping family, the weekly bill is significantly lower – around 7,700 SEK for a pitch with access to electricity and water. The price includes travel by motorhome or caravan.
– Charter is the form of travel that has increased in price the most in the last ten years and as things stand now, you can get over five camping weeks for the price of one charter week. The differences are so big that it pays to think through what the holiday actually will and can cost, says Ola Söderlind, household economist at Zmarta.
Charter 50 percent more expensive in ten years
Since 2015, prices have increased sharply for all travel options. Charter holidays stand out the most, with a price increase of almost 50 percent in ten years. This is significantly more than the general inflation during the same period, which is just over 30 percent. Living abroad, renting a cottage in Sweden and camping holidays have also become significantly more expensive – with price increases of around 27 to 30 percent in ten years.
Holiday prices lower than last year
Compared to last year, however, holiday prices have fallen slightly, according to Zmarta's compilation. This is most noticeable in the camping week, where the cost has decreased by just over 10 percent. Holidaying in Sweden with a rented cottage has also become about 5 percent cheaper. For charter trips and renting houses abroad, it is about a decline of about 2.5 percent.
– Prices rose sharply in the years after the pandemic and although they have leveled off somewhat now, the levels are still high. Many people tend to underestimate holiday costs. In addition to travel and accommodation costs, you also have to factor in costs for things like food, drink and entertainment. So it's important to compare the full cost of the different options, says Ola Söderlind.

About the compilation
Zmarta has compared what different types of vacations cost for a family with two adults and two children (8 and 11 years old) in the summer of 2025 – and how prices have developed over time. The data is based on current average prices from booking sites such as Ticket, Airbnb and Skyscanner as well as statistics from Statistics Sweden's Consumer Price Index (CPI) for product groups such as air charter, air travel, gasoline and camping rentals. Travel costs by car/motorhome/caravan correspond to the fuel costs for a normal holiday drive of 700 kilometers. All prices are averages for a week in July and include both travel and accommodation. To calculate backwards in time, current prices have been adjusted based on the relevant CPI for each component.
