At airports where there is a special scanner, you will now be allowed to bring two liters of liquid, according to new rules. But this is not yet available in Sweden. Passengers must check for themselves which airports this applies to – which can create confusion. 

There is only one such scanner from a British supplier that is currently approved by the EU.

Arlanda's Terminal 5 is among the locations that have introduced new X-ray equipment in recent years that allows passengers to bring larger amounts of liquid, but it is not covered by the new EU regulations. 

May cause confusion

The new approved equipment is being installed at several airports, including Kastrup in Copenhagen. 

But the rule change can cause confusion when different amounts of liquid apply at different airports – meaning you may be allowed to carry different amounts of liquid with you on your trip there and back.

Passengers must check for themselves which airports this applies to.

– I understand that it can be perceived as confusing because there is uncertainty about what equipment a specific airport has, says Jörgen Andersson, section manager for airspace and airports at the Swedish Transport Agency, to Swedish Radio. 

Will be introduced gradually

The Swedish Transport Agency A press spokesperson says that there is still no timeframe for when new approved scanners will be introduced in Sweden. 

– There will be a gradual increase, so far there is only one approved scanner and it is not available in Sweden, says Mikael Andersson. 

However, he believes that the new EU regulations open up the possibility of carrying larger volumes of liquid on aircraft in the longer term.
