The family had been on holiday in Spain. But at the airport before their return trip to England they were separated from each other. The son then ended up on a flight to Milan, reports Daily Mail.
A British family had been on holiday on the Spanish holiday island of Menorca. But when it was time to return home, scenes unfolded that brought to mind the movie "Home Alone 2".
It was hectic at the airport in Menorca on Monday, and sometime before the scheduled departure to London, the parents were separated from their 15-year-old son, writes the Daily Mail.
All three eventually left by plane – but on different planes. The parents traveled as planned with TUI to London, while the son ended up on an Easyjet flight east to Milan, Italy.
Unclear how they were separated
At some point during the journey, the mother realised what had happened and raised the alarm. Spanish police were called in and reviewed security footage, which showed that the boy had managed to board the flight to Milan. Initially, a missing child alert was issued at the airport, but it was cancelled when it was confirmed that the boy was on his way to Milan.
It is still unclear how, when and where at the airport the family was separated, as well as whether they were traveling with more children than the 15-year-old son.
It is also unclear how the boy managed to board the plane to Milan without a valid ticket. According to a source to the Daily Mail, he may have sneaked on board after the gate had closed and the staff had left their posts. However, cabin crew discovered during the flight that he was missing a ticket.
Got on a flight down to Italy
After landing in London, the mother immediately boarded a flight to Milan to pick up her son.
A spokesperson for Easyjet stated in a comment to the Daily Mail that the company is investigating how the incident could have occurred and continued:
”"The passenger was met by our team and local authorities in Milan, and we have arranged travel for a family member to meet him there during the day. We remain in contact with the family to offer our support."”
