Devastating floods have hit Cape Verde.

Nine people have died and 1,500 have been forced to flee their homes. The country has now declared a state of emergency on the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão, writes BBC.

Tropical Storm Erin hit the island nation on Monday, dropping 193 millimeters of rain in just five hours – far more than São Vicente gets in a year. Deputy Prime Minister Olavo Correia calls the situation ”catastrophic.”.
