Study: Heat waves make you age faster

Northern Sweden enjoyed a long-lasting heatwave this summer. But the nice weather can punish you. A new study, published in Nature Climate Change, shows that repeated heat waves can make you age faster physically.

Researchers analyzed data from 24,922 adults in Taiwan with an average age of 46 to measure how heat waves affect aging.

They quickly discovered the difference between biological and physical age and linked this to exposure to extreme heat.

Biological age is a measure of how well the human body functions at the molecular and organ level compared to chronological age, which is based on date of birth.

By analyzing data over a 15-year period, from 2008 to 2022, the researchers discovered that high exposure to heat waves could be linked to faster aging.

Even though the participants themselves adapted to the heat, the effects did not disappear, writes The Independent.
