The reason: The toilets on the Boeing 737 suddenly became "out of order" in the middle of the six-hour flight.

”"A flight from Denpasar to Brisbane on Thursday evening suffered an in-flight problem that affected toilet functionality,",says the airline Virgin in a statement.

– An elderly woman could not hold back and had the humiliating experience of urinating in public, says a passenger, according to Australian 7News.

The cabin crew's message to other passengers was to try to pee in bottles or "on top of what's already in the toilet," the television channel reported.

The union's angry statement

A male passenger describes to Australian 7News that the toilets quickly became clogged and eventually overflowed with feces, urine and used paper towels.

The man further says that "the smell spread through the aircraft and seeped out onto the floor.".

”We sincerely apologize to our guests and thank our crew for handling a challenging situation on board.”, the airline further writes in its statement. 

The Transport Workers' Union in Australia calls the incident "serious and risky for both staff and passengers.".

“Across the industry, occupational health and safety risks are increasing, with a trend towards prioritizing profits over safety. We need to see decisions that protect the public and staff, not just flight departures,” said Emily McMillan, national assistant secretary of the union, according to 7News.
