When darkness and cold take over here at home, many look towards distant travel destinations. According to TUI has bookings to Southeast Asia, with destinations such as Vietnam, Bali or Thailand, increased by an average of 28 percent compared to last winter.
Bookings to Sri Lanka (75 percent), Zanzibar (21 percent) and the Dominican Republic (21 percent) are also increasing. One explanation is that fewer Swedes let their wallets dictate their travel plans, according to previous surveys. But this year's winter trend is also about more than just sun and swimming. More and more people are demanding trips that combine beach with adventure and cultural experiences, according to the travel company.
– It is a development that reflects how travel has changed in recent years, partly driven by generation Z and millennials. The traditional charter week has received competition from longer stays where curiosity and exploration are at the center. Travelers want to combine sun and water with a nature adventure or to experience everyday life in the place they are visiting, says Dian Martinez Valencia, communications manager at TUI.
Local culture and nature experiences attract
Snorkeling among coral reefs, hiking in tropical surroundings or tasting safaris at local markets are some examples of experiences that travelers are requesting, according to TUI. But just as important is meeting the local people and getting closer to the culture.
– Traveling far away is no longer just about escaping the cold, but about finding even more meaning in travel and bringing new perspectives home. Many of our excursions are built around getting closer to the local culture, says Dian Martinez Valencia, communications manager at TUI.
